Eagleton's Farewell Address from Beyond the Grave
Sun Mar 11, 2007 at 10:32:11 AM PDT
The world knew him as Senator Thomas Eagleton but we in Missouri just called him Tom. Even at his funeral yesterday, he was simply Tom:
Some of Eagleton's old campaign stickers from his 1974 re-election bid — declaring simply "TOM" — were slapped on lapels. Others wore small white and blue campaign buttons from Eagleton's last re-election bid in 1980.
The celebrant of his funeral mass, Fr. Lawrence Biondi, referred to him as Tom and everyone in the congregation received a copy of the "Farewell Address" he wrote for the occasion, which was signed "Tom E."
And, in it, he didn’t hesitate, even in death, to criticize the current administration and even a fellow Missourian:
[The Iraq] war will go down in American history as one of our greatest blunders. It will be remembered, in part, as a curse to our Constitution when Attorney General John Ashcroft attempted to put a democratic face on torture.
