Ray McGovern: Speaking Truth 2 Power.

Fri Oct 27, 2006 at 01:59:10 PM PDT

If you haven't heard of Ray McGovern, you should.  He is the brave man, he has the knowledge and experience found in the wise, and he has something important to say to America -- which I will paraphrase, so that you may draw your own conclusions.  This is aimed not just at Kossacks -- please read on.

I had the good fortune to be able to hear Mr. McGovern speak a few days ago.  He is traveling the Northeast, speaking to Americans, telling them what he feels they should know.  He came and spoke at a gathering an hour outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  It was held in a junior high school auditorium.  The gathering was sponsored by (as best I can tell), Democracy for America and Witness for Peace.

Join me over the flip for my notes from his speech, and his upcoming schedule.

Exponentialize GOTV: use your Address Book!

Mon Oct 23, 2006 at 02:22:25 PM PDT

Want to really GET OUT THE VOTE on Nov. 7th?

"What can I do?"

I am asked this question every day right now.  Every day people of all ages ask me what they can do to derail George W. Bush and his nasty band of Republican cronies.  If you live in a hotly contested district, there are many opportunities to volunteer.  But for many -- whether in less competitive districts, or because they are shy or uncomfortable or new to politics -- volunteering face-to-face is not an option they are willing to pursue.  Still, there IS something everyone of your progressive/liberal/Democratic friends can do:  volunteer for MoveOn.org's "Call for Change".  And there is something easy you can do:  spread the word on the GOTV effort!.

Imagine if every Kossack got ten people to get ten people to get ten people to volunteer for the Democratic GOTV effort.  That's how to exponentialize our GOTV efforts.

Jump the fold for my open letter to my friends asking them to help get Democrats elected.

Bushism and Morality in an Extra-electoral sense

Wed Aug 09, 2006 at 12:35:59 PM PDT

Yes, it's all about elections.  To the victor goes the spoils, and the spoils includes the tools to weaken your opponents for years to come, not to mention controlling the national agenda, controlling spending, and passing and enforcing laws.  We are working round-the-clock and contributing regularly to win elections.  There is more to elections, and more to this election, than that.  Take the jump.  (Some pictures, one of them moderately graphic.)

Renee Montagne: biting the neck of liberalism, again.

Tue Jun 06, 2006 at 07:24:58 AM PDT

The following exchange was broadcast this morning (6 June, 2006) on Morning Edition (NPR's morning news and entertainment show).  Five minutes were devoted to Renee Montagne's interview with the Mayor of Toronto, David Miller.  Montagne, following her usual modus operandi, leaps on a chance to make her ignorant, stupid, xenophobic, Bushist points.

Make the jump for the transcript, which I typed out just for you.

Pentagon insider speaks: NeoCons LIED early and as often as possible.

Mon Apr 03, 2006 at 01:05:50 PM PDT

Great, informative interview w. Lt. Col. Karen Kwiatkowski on CSPAN's new interview program Q & A.  The entire interview is well worth watching.  It is available from the Q & A website, both in video and transcript.

Kwiatkowski plays a significant part in Eugene Jarecki's 2005  movie Why We Fight, which won the Grand Jury for Documentaries at that year's Sundance Festival (trailer).  She provides an insider's tale of how Bushism was forced onto the Pentagon agenda.  Rather than take part in a charade, she retired.

that's really when my eyes began to be opened about how our policy towards invading, destroying and occupying Iraq ... when suddenly you have a veil pulled away and you see something - and it was inconsistent with my values as a military officer.

Follow where Helen leads: What would you ask?

Thu Mar 23, 2006 at 08:24:40 AM PDT

Kossacks,

This week we've seen woman-with-qualities Helen Thomas ask man-without-qualities George W. Bush a question -- we've seen him petulantly stammer hackitudes as he uses up enough time to allow him to move on to the next question (the usual "baffle 'em gambit).  We've seen the collision of character with no-character, the wrestling match of knife and fog, of facts and propaganda.  What if we each got to ask Mr. Bush a question -- what if Mr. Bush held a press conference with ALL of America and had to answer YOUR questions.  What would you ask?

Me?  Probably not what I've put below the fold, but it's a start.

Photos of Huge Police presence at Pittsburgh Peace Parade.

Sat Mar 18, 2006 at 07:38:48 PM PDT

Unfortunately, I had to work and missed most of the parade.  I heard from some who were in or watched it go by that there were about 1,000 people, all ages, all types, many signs for peace, for IMPEACHING BUSH, for ENDING THE FALSE WAR.  What everyone noticed was the huge police presence.  I caught up with the march at the end, in Oakland, the densely populated urban neighborhood that the University of Pittsburgh calls home.

Photos and some comments after the flip.  (A lot of medium size photos.)

Hope Sat. night isn't the worst time to submit this.  What did you see in your homeland?

You want a plank? Walk this down to Pennsylvania Avenue, tilt it against the iron fence, and vault

Thu Feb 09, 2006 at 12:41:24 PM PDT

I feel the need to pre-amble:  This is just some passionate screed.  There are no facts here, though if you read carefully you can connect almost everything I say to a specific event.  There is nothing "breaking" here.  This is partisan, though I intend for it it to be more morally partisan than politically partisan.  This is not  reasoned appeal to the reality-based community -- the Bushist conspirators long ago learned how to subvert, divert, and string out any shoulder the reality-based community can bring to bear on their stranglehold on the levers of power.  No, I have given that up.  This is just ... horse-spit in the face of a malevolent owner.  Kick down the gates.  Anyway, enough "pre" -- let's "gallop" over to where the waters are hot.  This is an open letter to Democrats seeking office.

Filibuster FAX! DO IT!

Fri Jan 27, 2006 at 01:22:54 PM PDT

Yesterday I posted a diary about faxing all 100 US Senators.  That felt GOOD!  Posting the diary felt good, too.  Go here for detailed instructions on how to send 100 faxes (or 1).  I've listed fax and phone numbers for all 100 senators as well.  It's EASY.

Today I upped the ante.  I sent my LTE to most of the papers listed on MoveOn's excellent letter-sending page.  It's over the fold.  And --

Today I am sending my FILIBUSTER! FAX to all the democrats and the one independent in the Senate.  Leap the hedge and let's get to work.

A DittoHead "Argues"; a Librul serves jelly.

Fri Jan 13, 2006 at 08:25:17 PM PDT

We all face this.  How does one respond to stupidity -- stubborn, arrogant, antagonistic, mean Republican stupidity?  And we all know, you can't argue with stupidity.  Especially a stupidity that has been forged in Republican think tanks, honed in sessions with test audiences, and then delivered to the massed troops like a box of daggers by fascist demagogues such as the lying specialist first-class Rush Limbaugh.  The goal of this kind of mass propaganda is not to reveal the truth, it is to rile the troops, to make ordinary people ready to take up arms against their neighbors, to dehumanize the enemy prior to attacking them.  It is hate speech.  Facts can't be arrayed against this glinting onslaught..  It's not a debate -- it's a call to arms.  And it is deeply immoral and dishonest.

More over the hedge.

The Constitutional Crisis is now.

Tue Jan 03, 2006 at 01:07:17 PM PDT

We have arrived.  The bags are packed.  The train nears the station.

Many of us are thinking along parallel tracks.

Jonathan Schell make the point in the current issue of The Nation in an article titled The Hidden State Steps Forward.  It has been diaried here.
Chris Floyd gives his usual big picture view Clowntime is Over: The Last Stand of the American Republic

I've been pecking away at the feathers that line our American nest for months, and what I find is horrifying.  More over the hedgerow.

Why not pull the plug?

Tue Dec 20, 2005 at 12:14:55 PM PDT

Two questions which I don't see being discussed:

1.  Stop funding the illegal war?

and

2.  Repeal the War Resulution Bush wears like a camo outfit on a male whore?

Jump over for more.

Fresh air IN, foul air OUT: Reality comes to the debate?

Fri Dec 16, 2005 at 12:45:57 PM PDT

Here are the questions I think Americans need to ask themselves and each other:
1.  Are you at risk?
2.  Is War with Iraq an intelligent response to the threats which face us?
3.  Is the War with Iraq the best way to spend our limited money?

Hop over the hedge and let me expand on those.   And there's a Bonus -- my seven pecks to deflate the giant over-inflated ogre bush.

(For) Frank Rich: The Butcher, The Beast, and that rotten smell.

Tue Dec 13, 2005 at 04:56:18 AM PDT

Yesterday Slate Magazine published an article by Bryan Curtis.  Last night it was their featured piece, "front-paged" with a foremost position, a banner headline, and a full-color illustration.  It is called

Frank Rich
The Butcher of the Beltway.
By Bryan Curtis
Posted Monday, Dec. 12, 2005, at 6:52 PM ET

Mr. Curtis' piece is not directly misleading:  he writes about Frank Rich:  his history as a drama critic, his reception in New York City, his authorial voice.  Curtis' piece, though, is wrong.  Wrong is just about every way I can think of.  Wrong about journalism, wrong about journalists, wrong about debate, and wrong about the proper use of rhetoric.  Slate should be embarrassed to have published it and ashamed to have featured it front, center, and in color.  Mr. Curtis has performed an improbable invagination:  his pen now writes with the same ink as the Republican's ingenious rhetorical playbook.  His article exemplifies what is wrong with almost all of the mainstream media (and I include Slate Magazine Online).  Hop below the line and read my response:

That's Rich
